Types of Hong Kong Taxis

You'll see three taxi colors in Hong Kong — each licensed for a different area, with slightly different fare rates.

The three taxi colors

🔴

Red — Urban taxis

Cover Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and most of the New Territories. The most common color and the one you'll see at the airport and in the city.

🟢

Green — New Territories taxis

Licensed for the New Territories only, cannot pick up in urban Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. Slightly lower flag-fall rate.

🔵

Blue — Lantau taxis

Cover Lantau Island, including areas near the airport and Disneyland. Different rate structure again, and can't generally leave Lantau.

FAQ

Airport transfers are typically red (urban) or blue (Lantau) taxis, depending on your destination — this isn't something you need to figure out yourself when you book with us.

Generally no — green New Territories taxis have restricted coverage. This is exactly the kind of detail a fixed-price booking avoids: we handle vehicle assignment.

Yes, slightly — each has its own official meter rate. See our fare guide for specifics.

Why the color matters when you're booking

If you flag a taxi on the street, the color determines where it can legally take you — a green New Territories taxi generally can't drop you in Central, for instance. Fixed-price bookings like ours remove this concern entirely: we arrange the right vehicle for your specific route, so you don't need to identify colors or coverage areas yourself.

All three colors use the same basic metered-fare structure (flag-fall, then per-unit increments, dropping to a lower per-unit rate above a certain fare), just with slightly different starting rates. See how fares work for the full breakdown.
