Hong Kong Taxi Fare Calculator|The Statutory Meter, 15% Off and Flat Fares Compared
Pick a common airport route, or enter the distance, waiting time, class of taxi, baggage and tunnel charges by hand, and get an instant statutory meter estimate and a 15%-off meter reference. Common routes also show this site's flat fare reference range, so you can compare the real total cost.
The result is an estimate only. The distances for common routes are approximate figures from the centre of a district to Hong Kong International Airport, and cannot reflect a building entrance, live traffic, road works or the route the driver actually takes. The metered fare that counts is the licensed meter in the vehicle; a flat fare is the one confirmed in writing when you book.

How Does the Calculator Work?
Flag-fall for the first 2 km
Any distance up to and including 2 km is charged the full flag-fall. Distance increments only start beyond 2 km.
Every 200 m or part of it
Distance beyond the first 2 km counts one increment for every 200 m or part of it, so even less than 200 m counts as one increment.
Every minute of waiting or part of it
The waiting time you enter is converted separately into increments, then accumulated at the higher or lower increment stage.
A lower rate past the threshold
Red, green and blue taxis each have their own lower-increment threshold; past it, every later increment uses the lower amount.
Surcharges are counted separately
Baggage, animals, the telephone booking fee and road charges are not part of the pure metered distance fare, and are itemised in the result.
15% off applies only to the fare
This tool applies the 15% to the metered fare portion, then adds the surcharges you selected back at full value, so statutory road and baggage charges are not wrongly discounted.
Distance Plus Waiting Is Only a Model
A real meter switches automatically between distance and waiting time according to how fast the vehicle is moving. This tool converts the "distance travelled" and the "extra waiting minutes" you enter into increments separately, which suits trip planning but cannot replace the calibrated meter in the vehicle.
Common Tunnel and Road Charge Options
| Road/tunnel | Reference charge for a taxi passenger | Common trips |
|---|---|---|
| The Tsing Sha Highway toll section near Sha Tin | HK$8 | Sha Tin, Tai Po and Ma On Shan to the airport |
| Aberdeen Tunnel | HK$8 | Some Aberdeen and Southern District trips |
| Shing Mun Tunnels | HK$8 | Some trips from the eastern New Territories towards Tsuen Wan |
| Lion Rock Tunnel | HK$8 | Some Sha Tin to Kowloon trips |
| Tate's Cairn Tunnel | HK$20 | Some trips from the eastern New Territories to East Kowloon |
| Tai Lam Tunnel | HK$28 for taxis, all day | Some trips towards Sheung Shui, Fanling and Yuen Long |
| Cross-Harbour / Eastern / Western tunnels | HK$25 one way for taxis, all day | Between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon or the New Territories |
| A harbour crossing with the usual return amount | HK$50 | When you did not board at a cross-harbour taxi stand and ask to cross |
| Lantau Link | Free | Commonly used to and from the airport and Lantau |
| Tuen Mun–Chek Lap Kok Tunnel | Free | Commonly used from Tuen Mun to the airport |
| Tseung Kwan O Tunnel | Free | Tseung Kwan O and East Kowloon trips |
Road charges and traffic arrangements may be adjusted, and the actual route is the driver's decision based on traffic, safety and the statutory operating area. Where several toll roads are used on one trip, choose "Enter a road charge myself" in the calculator and enter the sum.
What Is the Difference Between the Statutory Meter, 15% Off and a Flat Fare?
| Compared on | Statutory meter | 15% off the meter | Booked flat fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| You know the total before setting off | No | You only know how the discount works | Yes |
| Traffic and waiting | The meter keeps rising | Discounted on the final metered fare | Normally unchanged by ordinary traffic once confirmed |
| Tunnel and road charges | Added on | This tool adds it back at full value | Should be set out in the written quotation |
| Ordinary baggage | $6 a piece as the law provides | This tool adds it back at full value | Generally included, but still confirm it |
| Extra stop en route | On the actual meter | On the final meter under the agreement | The price has to be confirmed again |
| Best for | Hailing on the street | Clear traffic, little baggage | An early flight, lots of baggage, peak hours and a fixed budget |
Why Does the Calculator Not Just Do "Meter Total × 0.85"?
Because tunnel, baggage, animal and telephone booking charges should not be assumed to be discounted too. This tool first works out the pure metered fare × 85%, then adds the surcharges you selected back at full value. What a discount actually covers is still as the service provider confirms in writing.
Notes on Baggage, Passengers and Vehicle Class
The current statutory baggage surcharge is $6 a piece, applying to baggage put in the boot, or carried in the passenger compartment with length, width and height adding up to more than 140 cm. Light hand baggage in the cabin is generally free.
| The situation | What we suggest |
|---|---|
| 1–3 people + ordinary baggage | You can generally start by asking about an ordinary taxi |
| 4 people + 4 large bags | May not fit in one ordinary taxi; the dimensions need confirming |
| 5–6 people | The vehicle's registered seats and model availability need confirming |
| 5–6 people with large cases | Usually means comparing a larger class against two taxis |
| Wheelchairs and crutches | No baggage surcharge where a passenger needs it because of a disability |
| Golf bag/bicycle/instrument | Give the dimensions and the number; an ordinary taxi may not carry it safely |
Taxi Fare Calculation: Frequently Asked Questions
For the first 2 km: $29 for a red taxi, $25.5 for a green taxi and $24 for a blue taxi.
After the first 2 km, by every 200 m or part of it, or every minute or part of a minute of waiting time. Once the threshold for that class is reached, every later increment costs less.
Because the meter charges for waiting time too. When the vehicle is stopped or crawling, it steps up for every minute or part of a minute.
The current statutory baggage surcharge is $6 a piece. Each animal or bird and each telephone booking is $5.
Do not assume it does. This tool applies the 15% only to the metered fare, then adds the surcharges back at full value. What a discount actually covers is as confirmed when you book.
No. It is an estimate from the distance, waiting and surcharges you entered. The metered fare that counts is the meter in the vehicle; a flat fare is the one confirmed in writing when you book.
A navigation distance between addresses depends on the map provider, the entrance used, live road conditions and the route. The tool offers common airport routes and a manual distance mode; for a precise address, just ask on WhatsApp.
Hong Kong's statutory taxi fares include no general night surcharge. A flat fare is handled on the time slot, amount and terms confirmed when you book.
For the outbound toll alone, choose $25; where you did not board at a cross-harbour taxi stand and a return amount generally applies, choose $50 in total. Confirm it against the trip and the rules in force.
Not necessarily. The law allows up to 6 passenger seats, but the registered seats and luggage space differ from vehicle to vehicle, so it must be confirmed in advance.

Sources and disclaimer: the calculator uses Hong Kong's current statutory fares: a red taxi charges $29 for the first 2 km, $2.1 per increment, dropping to $1.4 after $102.5; a green taxi $25.5, $1.9, dropping to $1.4 after $82.5; a blue taxi $24, $1.9, dropping to $1.6 after $195. Each chargeable piece of baggage is $6, each animal or bird $5, and each telephone booking $5; wheelchairs and canes are free. Both distance and waiting time are counted by each complete unit or part of one. The result is an estimate only: it cannot fully model how a meter switches automatically between distance and time at different speeds, and it does not include road charges you did not select. The metered fare that counts is the calibrated meter in the vehicle; a flat fare is the one confirmed in writing when you book. Road charges and statutory fares may be adjusted, so the Transport Department's latest announcements prevail. Last updated: 31 August 2026.
