Central & Western and Wan Chai direction
Central, Sheung Wan, Kennedy Town, Admiralty and Wan Chai are generally closer to the Western Harbour Crossing entrance, usually accessed via Connaught Road, Lung Wo Road or nearby roads before joining West Kowloon and Kwai Chung Highway to the airport.
East Hong Kong Island direction
North Point, Quarry Bay, Taikoo, Sai Wan Ho, Shau Kei Wan and Chai Wan usually first travel west along the Island Eastern Corridor before joining the Western Harbour Crossing or another suitable route. Journeys from East Hong Kong Island are therefore generally longer than from Central & Western.
Southern District direction
Aberdeen, Wong Chuk Hang, Ap Lei Chau, Pok Fu Lam and Stanley need to leave the Southern District first via the Aberdeen Tunnel, Pok Fu Lam Road or other roads before reaching the north shore and crossing the harbour. Stanley and Shek O are the furthest and take the longest.
Tsing Ma Control Area toll exempted
The Tsing Ma Control Area toll from Tsing Yi to the airport has been exempted; the Tsing Long Tunnel, Kap Shui Mun Tunnel and Airport Tunnel are also toll-free. The main road cost for Hong Kong Island journeys is generally concentrated on the cross-harbour tunnel and return charge arrangements.
Tunnels and HK Island roads affect the journey most
The Western Harbour Crossing entrance, Island Eastern Corridor, Gloucester Road, Connaught Road and major Southern District roads can be visibly congested during peak hours. If a tunnel or major road has an incident, the driver may use another cross-harbour tunnel or route, and the toll may differ.

Why is the Hong Kong Island flat fare usually higher than Kowloon?
Mainly for two reasons: first, the journey distance is longer, requiring a harbour crossing before reaching Lantau; second, departures from Hong Kong Island generally involve cross-harbour tunnel tolls and return charge arrangements. Fares from Hong Kong Island are therefore generally higher than similar trips from West Kowloon.
