Kowloon Bay and Ngau Tau Kok
Kowloon Bay and Ngau Tau Kok are generally closer to the Kwun Tong Bypass and main Kowloon road entrances, and the journey connects to the West Kowloon Highway based on traffic, then via the Kwai Chung Highway, Tsing Yi and North Lantau Highway to the airport.
Kwun Tong town centre and business area
Traffic on Kwun Tong Road, Hoi Yuen Road, Wai Yip Street, Hoi Bun Road and within the business area affects how long it takes to reach the main roads. During weekday commuting hours, even a few street blocks can take longer than expected.
Lam Tin, Laguna City and Yau Tong
The driver connects to the main roads via Kwun Tong or East Kowloon roads based on the pickup location, road direction and real-time traffic. Some locations may first head towards Kwun Tong or Kowloon Bay, so the journey is generally longer than from Kowloon Bay.
No toll tunnels are generally involved from Kwun Tong to the airport
The common route via north Kowloon and Kwai Chung direction doesn't go through a cross-harbour tunnel; the Tsing Long Tunnel, Kap Shui Mun Tunnel and Airport Tunnel are toll-free, and the Tsing Ma Control Area toll has also been exempted. So there's generally no cross-harbour tunnel toll or return charge.
A road incident may require a different route
If there's an incident on the Kwun Tong Bypass, West Kowloon Highway, Kwai Chung Highway or the Tsing Yi section, the driver may use another main road depending on the situation. A metered trip is calculated by actual distance, waiting time and applicable road tolls; a flat fare should confirm at booking whether a reasonable detour affects the total price.
Should I Take a Red or Green Taxi from Kwun Tong to the Airport?
| Taxi category | Pickup in Kwun Tong | Suitable |
|---|---|---|
| Urban taxi (red) | Can pick up in Kwun Tong, Kowloon Bay, Ngau Tau Kok, Lam Tin and Yau Tong | Main vehicle type for this route |
| New Territories taxi (green) | Cannot freely pick up on general roads in the Kwun Tong district | Not suitable for a general Kwun Tong departure |
| Lantau taxi (blue) | Cannot pick up on general roads in Kwun Tong | Not applicable |
Kwun Tong is part of urban Kowloon, so an urban red taxi should normally be used. A red taxi can go directly from Kwun Tong to Hong Kong International Airport. Even though a green taxi can travel to the airport along a designated route, it still cannot freely pick up passengers on general roads in Kwun Tong.
See the Hong Kong Taxi Types for detailed operating areas and the 2026 Taxi Fare Standard for statutory fares.
Kwun Tong Flat Fare, Meter and 85% Off Comparison
| Comparison | Statutory meter | Meter with discount | Booked flat fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Know total before departure | No | Only the discount method | Yes |
| Traffic within Kwun Tong | Waiting time increases the meter | Discount on final meter reading | Normal congestion generally doesn't change the confirmed total |
| Ordinary luggage fee | Charged separately by law | Must confirm if included | Generally included |
| Reasonable route detour | By actual meter reading | By actual meter reading and discount | Handled per the confirmed terms |
| Extra stops | By meter and waiting | By agreement | Must be reconfirmed |
| Best suited for | Hailing on the spot | Smooth overnight traffic and light luggage | Peak hours, business trips, early flights and heavy luggage |
The Kwun Tong business area can see more traffic during commuting hours, and the meter counts waiting time towards the fare. A flat fare's main advantage is knowing the total before departure, but confirm whether ordinary luggage, airport parking, a second stop and extra waiting are included.
Compare using the Fare Calculator, the Ordinary Meter Calculator and the 85% Off Fare Calculator.

When should I board for an international flight?
If the airline recommends arriving about 3 hours before departure, from Kwun Tong town centre add about 40-55 minutes of typical journey time and a 20-30 minute traffic buffer, meaning boarding about 4 to 4.5 hours before takeoff. Yau Tong, Lei Yue Mun and peak hours should allow even more time.
Overnight early flights
Roads within Kwun Tong and main roads are generally smoother overnight, but don't plan a flight around the fastest possible time alone. Early-morning departures still need time for the driver's arrival, building gate access, loading luggage and unexpected road incidents.
Add extra buffer during Kwun Tong commuting hours
The Kwun Tong business area, Hoi Yuen Road, Wai Yip Street, Kwun Tong Road, Kowloon Bay and main road entrances can be congested during weekday morning and evening peak hours. Leave 20-30 minutes early or more when rushing for a flight, and avoid adding a second pickup point at the last minute.

Always state the office tower name and entrance clearly
Many office towers share the same street in the Kwun Tong business area, and a building's main entrance, car park entrance, taxi stand and loading zone may be on different roads. Please provide the full building name, street number, ground-floor entrance or car park location when booking, to avoid the driver arriving at the wrong building or stopping where pickup isn't allowed.
Kwun Tong Business Traveller and Company Airport Transfers
Office tower pickup
Pickup can be arranged from a Kwun Tong business area office, industrial building, hotel or conference venue, but you must provide the correct building entrance and a legal pickup location.
Fare receipt
A printed fare receipt can be requested for expense claims; keeping the flat fare confirmation and electronic payment record also helps with company accounting.
Electronic payment
If you need credit card, Octopus, Alipay, WeChat Pay, PayMe or FPS, state this when booking and confirm the vehicle's equipment.
Colleagues boarding at different stops
Multi-stop pickup in Kwun Tong, Kowloon Bay or Lam Tin increases distance and waiting, and generally cannot use the single-stop flat fare — the order must be provided in advance.
Flight information
Provide the airline, flight time and terminal requirement to count down departure based on check-in time.
Peak-hour buffer
Traffic in the business area is heavier around knock-off time, so allow time for the driver to enter the building, load luggage and leave Kwun Tong.
Passenger Numbers and Luggage Arrangements
| Item | Provide when booking |
|---|---|
| Ordinary luggage | Number of large and hand-carried items; the flat fare generally includes ordinary luggage fees, but the boot still has limited capacity |
| 4+ large items of luggage | Provide approximate size; two taxis may be needed |
| Strollers | State the folded size, accompanying children and other luggage quantity |
| Wheelchairs | State whether foldable and size; wheelchairs and canes used due to disability are exempt from luggage fees by law |
| Golf bags / musical instruments | Provide the length and quantity to confirm an ordinary taxi can carry them safely |
| Number of passengers | Includes adults and children; must not exceed the vehicle's registered capacity |
"Luggage included" doesn't mean unlimited capacity
A free ordinary luggage arrangement is just a fee policy — it doesn't mean a taxi can carry any quantity or size of items. Luggage must not block the driver's view, doors, seatbelts or passenger safety.
See Groups and Large Luggage Airport Taxi for groups and large luggage.

Airport Pickup to Kwun Tong
Provide the flight number and destination
Please provide the arrival date, flight number, number of passengers, luggage count, and the full destination in Kwun Tong, Kowloon Bay, Lam Tin or Yau Tong. Provide the office tower name and street, or the residential block number and entrance.
Notify after collecting luggage
Even after the flight shows as arrived, passengers still need to disembark, clear immigration, collect luggage and pass through customs. Notify the driver only after collecting luggage, and meet at the agreed terminal, level and pickup point.
Check the plate number
There are many red taxis and booked vehicles at Hong Kong Airport at the same time, so check the plate number, driver details and destination carefully before boarding — don't rely only on the vehicle model or colour.
Parking and waiting arrangements
Airport pickup may involve parking or a designated pickup area cost. If the flight is significantly delayed, luggage is lost, or a passenger cannot be reached for a long time, rearranging the driver may also be needed. Confirm free waiting periods and extra costs when booking.
Kwun Tong to Airport Transport Comparison
| Transport mode | Transfers | Luggage convenience | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Booked flat-fare taxi | Direct office tower or home to airport | Ordinary luggage fee generally included | Groups, business travellers, early flights, heavy luggage |
| Hailing a red taxi | Door-to-door | Luggage charged separately by law | Spontaneous departure, easy to hail, smooth traffic |
| Airport bus | Depends on boarding stop and route | Must handle and watch your own luggage | Solo traveller, light luggage, plenty of time |
| MTR to Airport Express | No direct connection, requires transfer | Dragging luggage between lines and walking | Near an MTR station, light luggage, not in a rush |
There's no direct Airport Express connection from the Kwun Tong line. Taking the MTR requires transferring to another line to reach Kowloon Station, Hong Kong Station or Tsing Yi Station, then the Airport Express. For groups, divide the flat fare by the number of passengers and compare against public transport fares, transfers, walking and luggage handling costs.
