How Hong Kong Taxi Fares Are Calculated
Metered fares follow an official formula — worth understanding even if you always book a fixed fare.
The Basic Formula (Red / Urban Taxis)
Flag-fall: $29
The meter starts at $29 the moment you get in, covering the first 2km.
+$2.1 per 200m after that
Beyond the first 2km, every roughly 200m (or 1 minute of waiting in traffic) adds $2.1.
Discounted rate after $102.5
Once the meter passes $102.5, the per-segment charge drops to $1.4 — long trips increase more slowly toward the end.
Extras are added separately
Tunnel tolls (at cost), luggage fees, and sometimes a dispatch fee are all added on top when you get out.
FAQ
Because tunnel tolls and luggage fees are added when you get out, not shown on the meter itself — exactly the kind of surprise a fixed fare avoids.
Slightly different — see Types of HK Taxis for coverage and fare differences.
It starts from the official formula, then sets a flat number that already includes tunnel tolls and luggage. See both side by side on the fare calculator.
