At Wong Tai Sin's 35 km, the meter reads about $285, approx. $242 after 85% off; while the fixed fare reference is $220–$240, already including the luggage fee, with no extra charge for traffic or waiting at red lights. In other words, the fixed fare is usually about $20–$30 better value than 85% off, and can save $60–$75 compared to the full meter plus luggage fee.
By contrast, Tuen Mun and Yuen Long/Tin Shui Wai have two routes (via the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Tunnel or the Tai Lam Tunnel) that differ greatly, making meter 85% off fairer for passengers there instead. Which Route to the Airport from Wong Tai Sin, Diamond Hill? Three Routes Analysed
East Kowloon to the airport's biggest advantage: zero tunnel fees can be achieved for the entire journey
Route 1: Lung Cheung Road → Ching Cheung Road → Kwai Chung Road → Lantau Link (most common)
From Wong Tai Sin and Diamond Hill, head west along Lung Cheung Road, join Ching Cheung Road down to Cheung Sha Wan, then onto Kwai Chung Road via the Cheung Tsing Tunnel, Tsing Ma Bridge, Kwai Chung Viewpoint Tunnel and Airport Tunnel to reach the airport. This route doesn't cross the harbour at all, and all the tunnels along the way are on the Transport Department's toll-free government road tunnels list, with the Lantau Link also toll-free since December 2020 — meaning zero tunnel fees for the entire journey.
Route 2: Central Kowloon Route → West Kowloon Highway → Kwai Chung Road (new route)
The Central Kowloon Route (Yau Ma Tei section)/Central Kowloon Corridor officially opened on 21 December 2025, about 4.7 km long, designed with dual three-lane separated carriageways, bypassing the congested Central Kowloon area. The Transport and Logistics Bureau noted that after opening, the peak-hour journey time from Yau Ma Tei to Kowloon Bay has been shortened from approx. 30 minutes to approx. 5 minutes. For the Kai Tak, San Po Kong, Diamond Hill and Wong Tai Sin area, heading west to West Kowloon then onto Kwai Chung Road during the morning rush is noticeably smoother than the old route via Prince Edward Road and Argyle Street.
Toll arrangement: The Transport Department's current "toll for road tunnels" information lists the Central Kowloon Route (Yau Ma Tei section tunnel) as a toll-free government road tunnel; a previous announcement had proposed an $8 toll. Actual charges are subject to the Transport Department's latest announcements; using our fixed fare, any tunnel fee is already included in the quote.
Route 3: Lion Rock Tunnel → Sha Tin → Tai Lam Tunnel (generally not used)
In theory it's possible to go via the Lion Rock Tunnel north to Sha Tin then around the western New Territories to the airport, but the route is notably longer and involves an extra tunnel fee, so this isn't used under normal circumstances. If a serious incident on Ching Cheung Road or Kwai Chung Road requires a detour, we'll notify you in advance and reconfirm the amount, never quietly rerouting and only charging you after you get out.
Why does "not crossing the harbour" affect the fare so much?
Departing from Hong Kong Island to the airport via one of the three cross-harbour tunnels, the current taxi tunnel fee is a flat $25 all day; and if the passenger doesn't board at a cross-harbour taxi rank, an additional $25 return tunnel fee applies, totalling $50. Wong Tai Sin and Diamond Hill are in Kowloon, and the trip to the airport doesn't involve crossing the harbour at all — this $50 never applies from start to finish. This is also the structural reason East Kowloon can achieve a $220–$240 fixed fare.
