Most vehicles heading to the airport from Kowloon, the eastern New Territories or northern New Territories have to detour onto Kwai Chung Road before joining the Lantau Link. The Cheung Tsing Tunnel, Kwai Chung Viewpoint Tunnel and Airport Tunnel along the way are all on the Transport Department's toll-free government road tunnels list; the Lantau Link has also been toll-free since December 2020. Combined with Tsuen Wan being on the Kowloon side, the route to the airport doesn't cross the harbour at all — meaning there's no $25 tunnel fee + $25 return fee totalling $50 as with a Hong Kong Island departure.

Tsuen Wan's unique congestion risk: container trucks, not private cars
The risk from Tsuen Wan to the airport isn't on Kwai Chung Road itself (which is usually smooth) but in the stretch before joining Kwai Chung Road. Heavy container-truck traffic concentrates around the Kwai Chung Container Terminal, with Tsuen Wan Road, Texaco Road and Kwai Chung Road carrying heavy traffic during the morning rush, and the Kwai Chung Road entrance can also back up.

A fact many people overlook: the Airport Express doesn't stop at Tsuen Wan
Tsuen Wan station is on the Tsuen Wan Line, and Tsuen Wan West station is on the Tuen Ma Line — neither is an Airport Express station. To take the rail to the airport, you'd go from Tsuen Wan West station on the Tuen Ma Line to Nam Cheong station to change to the Tung Chung Line, then to Tsing Yi station to change to the Airport Express — two changes while dragging luggage the entire way. So Tsuen Wan residents really have only two reasonable choices: the airport bus (routes like A31, E31 etc.) or a taxi.

Yes, and it's not necessarily more expensive. Sham Tseng and Ting Kau, west of Tsuen Wan along Castle Peak Road, can join the Lantau Link directly via Tuen Mun Road, and the distance is actually slightly shorter than from Tsuen Wan town centre, fixed fare reference approx. $170–$190. Ting Kau, Riviera Gardens and Sausalito are also served.
Yes. These estates are on higher ground with numerous entrances and blocks; the journey takes 5–10 minutes longer than from Tsuen Wan town centre, fixed fare reference approx. $190–$210. We recommend providing the block number and nearest bus stop or mall exit when booking, to reduce the driver's search time.
Very convenient. All three are in the direction of Lantau Island and the Lantau Link, the same main road as going to the airport. Disneyland is reached simply via Kwai Chung Road onto the Lantau Link; the HZMB Hong Kong Port is reached via the airport direction then onto the artificial island; Tung Chung is likewise via the Lantau Link. All can be booked 24 hours a day.
The Tsuen Wan urban area is served mainly by urban red taxis (flag fall $29). Red taxis can travel anywhere in Hong Kong (except Tung Chung Road and South Lantau Road) with no problem reaching the airport or Tung Chung. Yes, the fixed fare already includes the luggage fee, with no piece limit. Taxis generally carry 4–5 passengers (depending on registered seating); split into more than one vehicle if you exceed that. Please state at booking if you have a stroller, pet carrier (statutory $5 per animal), golf bag or oversized items. See Groups and Large Luggage.
