If your destination is close to Hong Kong, Kowloon or Tsing Yi station and you are travelling within service hours, the Airport Express is usually easy to budget for and its rail timing is steady.
A hotel or home far from a station
A taxi goes straight to the hotel, estate, commercial building or village house, with no change of service at Hong Kong or Kowloon station.
Three to five travelling together
Check the Airport Express group fare first, then compare it against the whole-vehicle taxi total plus the onward connection from the station — do not just multiply a standard single ticket by the number of people.

"24 Minutes on the Airport Express" Is Not 24 Minutes to Your Hotel
The 24 minutes is the train time from Airport Station to Hong Kong Station. It excludes the walk from the arrivals hall, waiting for the train, the walk inside the station after getting off, and changing to the MTR, a bus or a taxi to reach your hotel. A taxi's time runs from the pick-up point straight to the final address — but road congestion adds to it.

These are the standard fares as found in August 2026. A child generally means aged 3 to 11; an adult generally means 12 or over. The actual eligibility, offers, ticket types and terms are as the MTR latest announces.
First and Last Airport Express Trains
From the airport towards the city, the first train is generally about 05:54 and the last about 00:48. From Hong Kong Station towards the airport it is generally about 05:50 to 00:48; Kowloon and Tsing Yi are slightly later. Rail services may be adjusted for works or an incident, so check the MTR's live information before you travel.
Your Arrival Time Is Not When You Can Board
After a flight shows as landed, you still have to taxi in, disembark, clear immigration, collect your bags and pass customs. If a night flight's expected arrival is close to the last train, have an overnight bus or a taxi as a fallback.

The group offer has specified purchase and use terms, and all passengers normally have to travel together. The offer may be adjusted or withdrawn, so check the latest arrangements with the MTR before you travel.
So "a Taxi Is Always Cheaper for a Family of Four" Is Not Accurate
If four people qualify for the group fare, the Airport Express costs $200 for the group to Hong Kong Station, $180 to Kowloon and $120 to Tsing Yi — clearly less than four standard adult tickets. But if the hotel is far from a station, you still have to add the connecting taxi, MTR or bus fare, and the time the whole group spends moving the bags.
How to Compare Properly
Total Airport Express cost ＝ the group ticket or all the tickets ＋ the station-to-hotel connection ＋ any extra change of service; total taxi cost ＝ the meter or the confirmed price ＋ tunnel／road ＋ baggage ＋ any other applicable charge. Both sides only compare accurately when you use the final address.
How Is a Hong Kong Airport Taxi Fare Worked Out?
A statutory metered trip
A Hong Kong taxi's meter steps up by distance and waiting time, then the applicable statutory surcharges are added. The current first 2 km or any part of it is $29 for an urban taxi, $25.5 for a New Territories taxi and $24 for a Lantau taxi. Each later distance increment, waiting time, piece of baggage, telephone booking and road charge is then worked out under the applicable rules.
Booked flat fare
A flat fare should be confirmed in writing against the full origin, destination, date, time, passengers, baggage and stops en route, and should state whether tunnels, roads, ordinary baggage, parking, waiting and the telephone booking fee are included. A significant later change to the trip may need requoting.
15% off the meter
"15% off" may mean a specified portion of the final metered fare multiplied by 85%, but tunnels, roads, baggage, the telephone booking fee, parking and other items may not take part in the discount. Read the actual quotation terms; do not multiply everything by 0.85 yourself.
No General Statutory Small-Hours Surcharge — Which Is Not the Same as Every Price Being Fixed Forever
Hong Kong's statutory taxi fares carry no general "midnight surcharge", but an actual booked price is still confirmed against the route, supply, baggage, stops en route, waiting and any other requirement. So a claim like "the same price 24 hours" should be confirmed in a written quotation before each booking, not treated as a standing promise.

An Example: Hong Kong Airport to a Tsim Sha Tsui Hotel
The Express takes about 22 minutes from the airport to Kowloon Station, but you still have to get to the hotel itself; with a group ticket for four, the rail cost can be as low as $180 for the group, plus the connection. Baggage, Pushchairs and Wheelchairs Compared
One or two bags
Either generally works. Rail suits a destination near an Express station; a taxi suits going straight to the door.
Several large bags
On the Express you carry and change services yourself; a taxi means less carrying, but confirm first that the boot will take it.
Pushchairs and children
Count the child tickets, the pushchair, the platform walk and the change of service. A taxi is more direct, but give the pushchair's folded size first.
Wheelchairs and reduced mobility
Express stations have accessible facilities, but the final connection still has to be handled; for a taxi, confirm whether the wheelchair folds and that the vehicle suits.
Golf bags and oversized items
Whichever you choose, confirm the dimensions, the carrying and the vehicle capacity first — do not just say "two bags".
A group plus baggage

The 2026 Limited-Period Taxi-to-Airport-Express Offer
From 12 March to 11 September 2026, passengers with a same-day taxi receipt of $50 or more, or a specified voucher, can complete the designated process at the customer service centre at Hong Kong, Kowloon or Tsing Yi Airport Express station and get half off the Airport Express Octopus fare. The official examples of the adult half fare are $60 to Hong Kong Station, $52.5 to Kowloon and $36.5 to Tsing Yi.
This Is a Limited-Period Promotion, Not a Permanent Fare
Whether it is extended after 11 September 2026 is as the MTR latest announces. While this page keeps the information, it should be updated or removed once the offer ends, so that searchers do not take it to apply all year.
Mixing the Two Can Be More Practical
If your home is not far from Hong Kong, Kowloon or Tsing Yi station, you can take a short taxi ride to the station and then the Airport Express: that cuts both the bag carrying and the risk of a long congested road journey. Whether it works out cheaper depends on adding up the short taxi ride, the Express ticket and the terms of any offer.

- Enter the full final address: not just "Central", "Kowloon" or "the New Territories".

- Count all the baggage: large bags, a pushchair, a wheelchair and special items all affect the choice.
