What Is the Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint? What's a "Joint Checkpoint"?
The Shenzhen Bay checkpoint has been operating since July 2007, at the western edge of Yuen Long district near Tin Shui Wai, and connects directly to Shenzhen's Nanshan district via the Shenzhen Bay Bridge. Its most distinctive feature is that Hong Kong and mainland authorities each apply their own immigration law inside a single joint checkpoint building — even though the building physically sits on land on the Shenzhen side of the bay, that land is leased to Hong Kong and Hong Kong law applies within it, forming a designated "Hong Kong Port Area."
One-stop clearance saves a real amount of time
Because both sets of checks happen in the same building, travellers don't need to clear Hong Kong departure in one hall, then cross a road or take a shuttle to a separate mainland arrival hall the way some crossings require. At Shenzhen Bay, you get out of the car, clear Hong Kong departure, walk a short distance, and you're already at the mainland arrival counters — one pass, done. That saves a meaningful amount of walking and queuing time, especially with heavy luggage, young children, or elderly travellers in tow.

Hong Kong has a few 24-hour crossings into Shenzhen, but each suits a different kind of traveller:

Man Kam To, Sha Tau Kok and Lo Wu aren't suitable for a taxi transfer
Man Kam To and Sha Tau Kok mainly serve goods vehicles or specific permit holders and aren't practical for most travellers. Lo Wu and the original Lok Ma Chau spur line checkpoints can only be crossed by the East Rail Line or on foot — there's no taxi transfer arrangement across them. For most independent travellers taking a taxi north, Shenzhen Bay, Lok Ma Chau/Huanggang and Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai are the practical options.
