Airport taxis for groups and large luggage | Families, teams, cruise passengers and golfers
Travelling as a group, a company team or a cruise passenger, or bringing a pushchair, a wheelchair, a golf bag, a bike box or several large cases? Tell us the number of passengers, the size of every bag and any special items before you book, and we will work out whether one car is enough or whether two taxis — or a different vehicle — are needed. The law allows a taxi to be registered with up to 6 passenger seats, but how many people and how much luggage a particular car can take depends on its registration and on safety.
First principle: seats, luggage and safety are not interchangeable
| Maximum passenger seats by law | A taxi may be registered with up to 6 passenger seats |
|---|---|
| Ordinary taxis in practice | A great many vehicles on the road still have 4 or 5 passenger seats |
| How many people can actually travel | Determined by that vehicle's registered seats, its seat belts and the space actually available |
| Luggage space | Limited by the boot, the passenger seats, the size of the items and safety requirements |
| What cannot be done | Luggage must not block the driver's view, the doors, the seat belts or the space passengers need to get out safely |
| The safest approach | Give us the number of people and the number and size of the bags when booking; if there is not enough room, we arrange two cars or a different vehicle |
"It fits" is not the same as "we can set off safely and legally"
Even if the passengers can squeeze in, the luggage may stop a door closing properly, block a mirror, obstruct a seat belt or make it unsafe to get in and out. A driver has a duty to put safety first, and should not overload or load unsafely to save you the cost of a second car.
One car, a larger vehicle, or two taxis?
| Your situation | What we usually suggest | What to confirm when booking |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 people with 2 large cases | One ordinary taxi will normally do | The size of the cases, and any golf bag or pushchair |
| 3 people with 3 large cases | Usually worth asking about one ordinary taxi first | Whether any of the cases is oversized |
| 4 people with 2–3 large cases | Depends on the vehicle and the sizes; confirm in advance | Hand luggage, pushchairs and the passenger seats |
| 4 people with 4 or more large cases | Usually needs a larger vehicle or two cars | The dimensions of the cases and whether they can be stacked |
| 5–6 people with little luggage | Confirm whether a vehicle with more registered seats is available | The number of registered seats, and hand luggage per person |
| 5–6 people with large cases | Normally two cars or a suitable larger vehicle | Passengers, luggage and seat belts all have to work at once |
| Cruise groups and company teams | Compare the total for one larger vehicle against two ordinary taxis | Disembarkation or event finish time, luggage sizes, the meeting point |
The most accurate approach: ask for both options
With 5–6 people or large luggage, just say on WhatsApp: "please compare a larger vehicle against two ordinary taxis." You then get both prices and can weigh up cost, waiting, luggage space and travelling together.
How is the luggage surcharge calculated?
| Item or situation | Statutory luggage surcharge | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Each piece placed in the boot | $6 | Charged per piece, not by weight |
| In the cabin, but with length, width and height totalling more than 140 cm | $6 | It can be chargeable luggage even if it is not in the boot |
| Light hand luggage in the cabin | Normally free of charge | Provided it is within the size limit and does not affect safety |
| Pushchairs | Treated as luggage, as above | Whether it folds, its size and where it goes all affect the arrangement |
| Wheelchairs and crutches | Free | No surcharge where a passenger needs them because of a disability |
| Per animal or bird | $5 | Say when booking what kind, how many, and whether there is a carrier |
Keep metered trips and fixed fares distinct
A metered trip is charged the applicable luggage fee under the rules; a booked fixed fare normally states whether ordinary luggage is included. Even where the fixed fare covers luggage, the space in the car still has to be confirmed first — no luggage charge does not mean unlimited loading.
The full explanation is in the tunnel and surcharge guide and the Hong Kong taxi fare guide.
What to tell us when booking for a group or large luggage
- The full date and time. For an overnight trip, give the year, month, day and a 24-hour time.
- Arrival or departure. For a departure, the take-off time; for an arrival, the airline and flight number.
- Each passenger. List adults, children and infants separately.
- Each large case. Give the number and the type of size — a 28-inch hard case, a 30-inch soft case, and so on.
- Hand-carried items. Backpacks, cabin cases, paper bags and laptop bags count — do not report only what goes in the boot.
- Special items. Pushchairs, wheelchairs, golf bags, bike boxes, ski bags, instruments, pet carriers.
- The full pickup location. The hotel, estate, cruise terminal, office building, or a pin for a village house.
- Say if you want both options. Ask us to compare a larger vehicle against two ordinary taxis.
Do not just write "6 people, 6 bags"
Six 20-inch cabin cases and six 30-inch hard cases plus a golf bag need completely different amounts of space. At minimum, say whether each is a cabin case, a medium case, a large case or something long — or send photos with dimensions.

Special luggage and passengers with particular needs
Pushchairs and families
Tell us whether the pushchair folds, its size and how many children are travelling. Children count towards the passenger seats; you cannot exceed them to make room for luggage.
Wheelchairs and mobility needs
Wheelchairs and crutches carry no luggage surcharge, but we still need to confirm the size, whether they fold, what help is needed getting in and out, and a safe place to stop.
Golf bags
A golf bag is long and will share the boot with any large cases. Tell us how many bags and how many cases when asking for a quote.
Bikes and sports equipment
Bike boxes, snowboards, surfboards, diving gear and large camera equipment need dimensions — an ordinary taxi may not be able to carry them safely.
Instruments and fragile items
Cellos, guitars, audio equipment and exhibition samples need to be properly packed, and we confirm in advance that they can be secured and carried safely.
Travelling with a pet
Say when booking what kind of animal, how many, the size of the carrier and whether there is other large luggage, so that passengers, driver and animal are all safe.
Group arrivals and cruise transfers
Meeting a flight at Hong Kong airport
Give the flight number, the arrival date, and details of the passengers and every bag. After landing there is still immigration, baggage reclaim and customs; tell the driver once you have all your bags, then go to the agreed pickup point.
Kai Tak Cruise Terminal
Cruise passengers usually have more large luggage. When booking, give the ship's name, the berthing time, your expected disembarkation time, the number of passengers and the luggage sizes. When an event ends or a ship empties, allow time for the driver to get in and queue.
With two cars, agree how you will meet
If we send two taxis, confirm each registration number, which passengers ride in which car, which luggage goes where, and whether you are meeting at the same point on arrival at the airport or hotel.
Do not dispatch for a group off the landing time alone
Large groups, long-haul flights and a lot of luggage all take longer to clear immigration and reclaim baggage. Using "message us once you have all the bags" as the final confirmation avoids arguments about parking and waiting.
Safety rules for groups and luggage
- The number of passengers must not exceed the vehicle's registered seats — children included.
- Every passenger must wear a seat belt where the seat has one.
- Luggage must not block the driver's view, the mirrors, the doors or the seat belts.
- Large items must not be placed where they interfere with front passengers or the driver's controls.
- If the boot will not close properly, the car should not set off.
- Fragile items, instruments and electronics should be properly packed by the owner.
- Count the bags on arrival before you leave the taxi.
- Keep the registration number and the receipt, so lost property can be followed up.
A driver refusing an unsafe load is not bad service
If the luggage exceeds what the vehicle can safely carry, the driver should refuse and suggest an extra car or another arrangement. Safety, the legal carrying capacity and the road rules always matter more than squeezing in to save a fare.

A larger vehicle or two taxis: how to compare the cost
| Compared on | One larger vehicle | Two ordinary taxis |
|---|---|---|
| Luggage space | Depends on the actual vehicle; confirm the boot and the seat layout | Usually easier to spread the luggage out |
| Travelling together | The whole group leaves and arrives together | Two drivers, two registrations and a meeting arrangement |
| Price | A larger vehicle is normally dearer | Two fares, plus road and waiting costs, added together |
| Availability in outlying areas | A larger vehicle may not be available immediately | Two cars also depend on both being free at once |
| The most accurate approach | Give us the full passenger and luggage details, then ask for a final total for both options | |
Do not assume a larger vehicle is always cheaper than two ordinary taxis, and do not assume two cars are always faster. A real comparison looks at the total price, how soon a car arrives, luggage safety, travelling together, and how you meet at the destination.
Groups and large luggage: common questions
The law allows a taxi to be registered with up to 6 passenger seats, but how many a particular car can carry depends on its registration. A great many ordinary taxis on the road still have 4 or 5 passenger seats.
Not necessarily. It depends on the size of each case, the hand luggage, and whether there is a pushchair. This combination often needs a larger vehicle or two taxis, so send the dimensions in advance to confirm.
The statutory luggage surcharge is currently $6 a piece, applying to luggage placed in the boot, or luggage in the cabin whose length, width and height total more than 140 cm. Light hand luggage is normally free.
A pushchair is treated as luggage: if it goes in the boot, or if it is in the cabin with length, width and height totalling more than 140 cm, a luggage charge normally applies. Whether a fixed fare covers it should be confirmed.
No surcharge applies to wheelchairs and crutches that a passenger needs because of a disability. We do still need the size and whether they fold, in advance.
It depends on the registered seats, the number of people, the luggage sizes and what is available. The most accurate approach is to ask for a total for a larger vehicle and for two ordinary taxis, and compare.
You can ask, but we need the type of item, how many, the length, and whether it comes apart or folds. An ordinary taxi may not be able to carry it safely.
Not necessarily. The price depends on the vehicle, the seats, the luggage, the date, the route and availability. Compare the total for both options along with how safely the luggage can be carried.
At least a day ahead, and earlier still for long holidays, overnight arrivals, cruise arrivals, six passengers or a lot of luggage.
You can ask for a larger vehicle or one with 6 passenger seats, but no particular model can be guaranteed. What applies is the registered seat count and the price confirmed when we dispatch.
Adjustments can be made within the registered seats and safety, but the luggage still must not block the driver's view, the doors, the seat belts or the way out. Fewer passengers does not mean unlimited loading.
Confirm each registration, who rides in which car, which luggage goes where, and the meeting point at the destination when booking. For an arrival, tell both drivers once you have all the bags.

Sources and disclaimer: Hong Kong law has raised the maximum number of taxi passenger seats from 5 to 6, but how many people a particular vehicle can carry depends on its registered seats, the seat belts available, the size of the luggage and whether it can be loaded safely. The statutory luggage surcharge is currently $6 a piece, applying to luggage placed in the boot or luggage in the passenger cabin whose length, width and height total more than 140 cm; wheelchairs and crutches needed by a passenger because of a disability are free. When booking a fixed-fare service, whether ordinary luggage, oversized items, parking, road tolls and multiple vehicles are included is as confirmed in writing for that booking. Any arrangement is subject to safety, the legal carrying capacity and what is actually available. Last updated: 11 September 2026.
