This is the point Tung Chung residents most often get wrong — and it most affects your trip — under the Transport Department's "taxi operating area" rules

Legal basis: The Transport Department explicitly states that an urban taxi (red) can travel anywhere in Hong Kong except Tung Chung Road and the roads of South Lantau; while a Lantau taxi (blue) is restricted to Lantau Island, Chek Lap Kok, and the HZMB Hong Kong Port public transport interchange. In other words, the Tung Chung new town and the airport are an overlapping zone where all three vehicle types can operate, but once you cross Tung Chung Road towards South Lantau, only a blue taxi can go there.
What this means in practice: two things to remember
First, you don't need to worry about vehicle type for the airport. All three vehicle types are legal for Tung Chung to the airport, and we'll dispatch whichever vehicle arrives fastest and benefits you most at the time. The blue taxi's $24 flag fall is the lowest, so its meter reading is usually cheapest for short trips; but its supply is the smallest of the three types, so we don't rigidly restrict the vehicle type.
Second, book early for South Lantau or Discovery Bay. Ngong Ping, Tai O, Mui Wo, Cheung Sha, Shui Hau and Discovery Bay can only use a blue taxi, and blue taxis are the fewest in number of the three types, with demand concentrated on holidays and weekends. We recommend booking at least a day ahead and clearly stating your destination on WhatsApp so we can arrange the right vehicle type.

Tung Chung to the Airport: Taxi vs Airport Bus vs MTR
A fact many people don't know: the Airport Express doesn't stop at Tung Chung station
The Tung Chung Line and the Airport Express are two separate lines. Taking the rail from Tung Chung to the airport requires first taking the Tung Chung Line to Tsing Yi station, then changing to the Airport Express — neither the time nor the fare is worthwhile. So Tung Chung residents really have only two reasonable choices: the airport bus (routes like S1, S64 etc.) or a taxi.

Unique to Tung Chung: short journey, but "no room for delay"
The journey from Tung Chung to the airport is extremely short, so many people leave booking their car until the last minute. But precisely because it's short, any single delay takes up a huge proportion of the trip — waiting 15 minutes for a bus is already as long as the journey itself. When rushing for an early flight or a shift, the value of booking ahead isn't speed — it's having control over your time: an agreed time, a recorded plate number, and a driver who will wait for you.

Because its flag fall is lowest, short trips like within the Tung Chung district or Tung Chung to the airport usually have the lowest reading; but it takes until $195 to switch to the lower rate, so it's less competitive for long trips (and blue taxis themselves cannot enter the urban area).
Yes. The fixed fare already includes the luggage fee, with no piece limit. Taxis generally carry 4–5 passengers (depending on registered seating); split into more than one vehicle if you exceed that. Please state at booking if you have a stroller, pet carrier (statutory $5 per animal), golf bag or oversized items. Wheelchairs and crutches are exempt from surcharges by law. For a short weekday trip, the taxi rank at Tung Chung station or Citygate is fine; but during the morning and evening commute, holidays, AsiaWorld-Expo events, or late at night, the queueing time is unpredictable, and Yat Tung Estate, Mun Tung Estate and Seaview Crescent are some distance from the main ranks. The advantage of booking is door-to-door service, a recorded plate number, and a price confirmed in advance — much more reliable when rushing for a flight.

As the journey is short, 20–30 minutes ahead is generally sufficient in the daytime; for early hours, early mornings or long holidays, 1 hour ahead is recommended; for South Lantau or Discovery Bay (blue taxi only), a day ahead is recommended.
