It depends on the route. For short trips with no harbour crossing and free tunnels — such as Tuen Mun, Yuen Long, Tsing Yi and the airport to Disneyland — meter 85% off is usually cheaper. For long-distance, cross-harbour, luggage-heavy or congestion-prone routes — such as Hong Kong Island, Victoria Peak and Ocean Park — a fixed fare is usually more favourable, since it already includes tunnels, the return fee and luggage, and traffic won't increase the price.

Yes. The statutory fare table specifies that the meter advances for every 200 metres or part thereof, or every minute or part thereof of waiting time. So stopping, waiting at lights and traffic congestion all increase the metered fare. An 85% discount multiplies the increased meter reading by 0.85; a fixed fare is not affected by traffic.

The statutory taxi fare itself has no minimum charge — the shortest trip is simply the flag-fall fare. Some booking services may set their own minimum service fee for extremely short trips; this is a commercial arrangement by the service provider, not a statutory charge, and must be stated at booking. We state the actual amount clearly at quote time, never raising a minimum charge after you're already in the car.

If you enter the in-vehicle meter reading directly, multiplying by 0.85 gives a mathematically accurate result. If estimating by distance, the result is still affected by the actual route, traffic, waiting time, rounding for every 200 metres or minute "or part thereof," vehicle type, tunnels and surcharges, so it can only serve as an estimate. The final amount is subject to the in-vehicle statutory meter and the confirmed booking quote.

Generally no. The three cross-harbour tunnels currently charge a flat all-day rate of $25 per taxi trip; a further $25 return fee applies when conditions are met. Meter 85% off generally discounts only the meter reading, with tunnel and return fees added in full; if you choose a "tunnel-inclusive" fixed fare, follow that fixed quote instead.

The statutory luggage fee is $6 per piece. Two pieces is $12, four pieces $24, six pieces $36. With just one or two pieces on a short trip, meter 85% off is usually still cheaper; with four or more pieces, large cruise luggage, or a large group, a fixed fare with "unlimited luggage pieces" may be better value.
