Is this Hong Kong taxi fare calculator accurate?

The calculator uses the 2026 applicable statutory red, green and blue taxi flag-fall and two-stage rate rules, effective from 14 July 2024. It can estimate pure distance, clearly stated stopped waiting time, luggage, and known tunnel fees; but the actual fare is still affected by the actual route, traffic lights, congestion, boarding/alighting time, the tunnels the driver takes, and surcharges. The in-vehicle statutory meter and Transport Department announcements are the final authority.

Does the meter keep running at red lights or in traffic?

Yes. The statutory fare table states 'for every 200 metres or part thereof, or every minute or part thereof of waiting time' — both distance and waiting time trigger the meter. This calculator adds the manually entered fully-stopped waiting minutes separately; when moving slowly in traffic while still covering distance, the actual meter switches between distance and time.

How are the harbour tunnel fee and return tunnel fee calculated?

Cross-Harbour, Eastern and Western Harbour Tunnel taxi fares are currently a flat all-day rate of $25 per trip. If the passenger doesn't board at a cross-harbour taxi rank and the final destination is on the other side of the harbour, a further $25 return tunnel fee applies, totalling $50.

How is the 85% off fare calculated?

85% off is calculated by multiplying the statutory meter reading by 0.85. For example, a $200 meter reading gives $170 after 85% off. Whether luggage, tunnels and other surcharges are included must be confirmed against the service quote.
