Types of Hong Kong Taxis

Hong Kong has three taxi colours, each licensed for a different area, with fares that differ slightly too.

The Three Colours

🔴

Red — Urban taxis

Cover Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and most of the New Territories. The most common colour, seen at the airport and throughout the city.

🟢

Green — New Territories taxis

Can only pick up and drop off within the New Territories, not in urban Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. Slightly cheaper flag-fall.

🔵

Blue — Lantau taxis

Cover Lantau Island, including the area near the airport and Disneyland, with a different fare structure and usually can't leave Lantau.

FAQ

Airport transfers are usually red or blue, depending on your destination — you don't need to work this out yourself, we'll arrange the right vehicle when you book.

Generally no, New Territories taxis have limited coverage. This is exactly the kind of hassle a booked fixed fare avoids — we handle the vehicle assignment.

Slightly different — each has its own official metered rate. See How Fares Are Calculated.

Why the Colour Matters When Booking

If you hail a taxi on the street, its colour determines where it can legally take you — a green taxi, for example, usually can't drop you in Central. Booking a fixed fare removes that decision from you — we arrange the right vehicle for your route.

All three colours use the same metered-fare structure (flag-fall, then per-segment increases, with a lower rate after a certain amount) — only the flag-fall price differs. See How Fares Are Calculated.
